Happy Thursday travelers!

Soul Experiences

I am ready for the open road!  Once again I feel the pull of travel tugging at my soul.  I desire to unleash my car upon the blacktop of our country.  The unknown waiting to be discovered.  The small communities with their amazing stores, hiding treasures from the mega chain retailers.  Beautiful gems of unrecognized accomplishments you only hear about if you slow down long enough to listen.  The local café serving up home cooked meals to the famers.  The local merchant selling knick-knacks none of us really need but a trinket from the area, brings back our travel memories when we are ensconced in our daily routines, reminding us of the fun we had.  The community playhouse is a refurbished barn, giving new meaning to “off Broadway”, with the performances exuding more passion than the highest paid actors on the Big Screen.

I long for adventure, discovery, knowledge and soulful awareness.  My next…

Nature’s Tiny Treasures

Image

One of my favorite pastimes is photographing the natural world.  I love capturing obscure angles for the flora and fauna around me.  I believe the whole world is full of tiny treasures.  It may be the blooming spring flowers, smoke rising from a smoldering campfire, or even the perspective of an insect on a branch.  The world is a treasure waiting to be explored!

Go out and find your treasures!

The sun has bathed my world in light.  I love the way the trees are greener, the flowers are brighter, and the world just looks refreshed.  The gentle rains fell, washing away all the dirt the wind blew in and now the springtime seems bursting with life.

I have a small trip planned for today and I can’t wait to go.  Twisting over the hills (yes, hills in Nebraska).  Scouting new adventures to enjoy.  The fields will be black, miles of churned earth moistened by the rains.  The smiles on strangers faces will be broader for the sun shinning on them today.  Everything always feels refreshed after the cloud filled skies of the past rainy days.

Travel well my friends.  Don’t forget your big sunshine smiles!

Remarkable Strength

Image

I found myself taking an unexpected day off Wednesday.  I say ‘day off’ very light heartedly.  I physically worked harder than I have in a very long time.  I have not been as attentive to my yard work as I used to be.  I have three capable boys who mow the weeds for me and a host of neighbor youngsters to keep the grass from growing too high.  Needless to say I have not raked, trimmed, mulched, pruned or even planted in about a eighteen months.  It is a jungle out there.

So I made a plan before the predicted gentle rains of Thursday set in, I was going to take Wednesday morning to whip my front yard into shape.  Nine hours later I still have plants to plant and mulch to sprinkle.  No well laid plan goes exactly as planned.  The new hoses weren’t long enough, the connectors broke, the clippers clipped me instead of the branch.  The list of derailments is a long one.

What I found out this morning is my older body is not failing me completely.  Maybe it was the extra five hours I took to accomplish my goals.  Maybe I wasn’t as physical as my mind has decided I am.  I like to think my muscles remember the strain of working hard.  They awoke to the type of work they have always done.  Strenuous, intense, movement.

My physical self is thankful for the awakening.  My soulful spirit is rejuvenated by the gardening.  The nurturing of my little slice of this world.  The embracing of the natural world and our modern existence combining.  It is a therapeutic journey for me.  The dirt under my nails, the thorn scratches down my sun kissed arms, my muscles reaching and stretching, it helps me remember I am alive.  It is meditative.  I am happy I took the time to garden yesterday.

Everyone needs a break from their routines.  Maybe it is not gardening, whatever it is for you, invest the time in yourself to rejuvenate your spirit.  Indulge in an activity that lifts your soul.  Take the time to remind yourself, you are worth your time.

Travel well my friends.

Soul Experiences

Travel moves my soul.  It makes me feel alive.  It helps me to gain perspective on our big wide world.  I desire travel like I desire my children’s happiness.  The mountains call to me, the beach beckons, faraway lands whisper for me to explore.  The path that was not taken will always be my favorite passage.  I want to stumble through snow in July and trudge through the tropics in February.  I want to venture to the top of the next ridge and look over an unexplored valley.  I need to board a train with no particular destination in mind.

On this day I wish you happiness, inner peace and a sense of adventure in all you do.  Even if travel is not your inspiration, enjoy the simple treasures around you.  They abound even when life is crashing over you, there will always be a blessing for you.  Look closely and enjoy the…

Smile

Happy Monday!

Soul Experiences

Put a smile on your face and feel it in your soul!

Image

The smile you wear is not for the outside world, although they enjoy it.  Your smile is for you!  It is impossible to genuinely smile and retain sadness or anger.  The joy your body resonates when you are smiling will carry you through your day.  It helps you to see the positive in your activities.  The traffic jam feels less irritating, the negative co-worker is more tolerable, and everyone will wonder what on earth you are smiling about!  Smiles are contagious, the kind of contagious you want to be infected with.  So put your smile on your face, embrace the world and have a happy day!

Life Overwhelming

Soul Experiences

Your heart is breaking and I cannot stop it.  Your world is crumbling and I cannot piece it back together for you.  Your responsibilities are overwhelming you and I can not take them away.

What I can do is love you, reassure you, support you and lift your spirit.  I have not walked in your shoes but I will always walk beside you.  My words are hollow but my heart is full, full of love and understanding for you.  I will shoulder all the hurt I can for you.  I will hold you up when you feel you cannot stand a moment longer.  The strength you must exude will bring you to your knees.  Your tears will come from a well deep within you.  And in all the hurt you will find hope, faith and a love you never knew your heart could hold.  The faces that smile at you…

Strangers to Friends

Image

Travel day!  I love these days.  I love the gathering of last minute items, the rush of getting out the door, and all the excitement of the expectant travels.  Today is a little different for me.  Today I will be traveling with a group of strangers.  Not that I haven’t traveled in a group but usually I am with a familiar face or two.  So I am off adventuring with 20 new future friends!

Life Overwhelming

The faces that smile at you will embolden your passions.  The hands that hold tightly to yours will lift your sorrow.  The laughter you hear will be the sweetest sound you have ever heard.  This is your time to straighten your back and make decisions for yourself and yourself alone.  These choices will uplift you and the people who love you.  It is not the end….it is the beginning!

I can tell you, without a doubt or hesitation, when you make it through this, life will only get better.  There is no worse.  There is only light.  It is hard to see at first but it is there and it will cocoon you in it’s warmth.  This peace you find will be worth the hell because you have come through the worst.  No matter where your path leads you, no matter the path you choose, I will be there.  Right beside you.

Consistency

Image

I am not in the habit of writing negative reviews and to be honest this isn’t intended to be a review.  That being said, here I go…

I admit, I have occasional cravings for McDonald’s.  As an adult with almost grown children my Golden Arches days should be behind me.  Maybe it is the nostalgia of treating my little ones to a “naughty” treat or maybe it is the ease of knowing the menu or maybe over my lifetime McDonald’s food has become a slight addiction.  Today I decided to use my free Big Mac coupon for lunch.  I chose the busiest location in my town, out of convenience to my office location, just before the lunch rush or so I thought.  Instead of attempting to eat the over large, slippery sandwich and drive, I opted to go into the restaurant for my quick nosh.  The years of preschool teaching with food prep have ingrained in me the need to wash my hands often.  As all good habits do, of mine, my brain set itself on auto pilot and headed for the public restroom, yikes!  The smell permeating my senses almost chased me from the tiny room.  The smell of cat urine and musty wallpaper was overwhelming.  Litter scattered on the floor, an automatic sink that sprayed with the force of a firefighters hose and a soap dispenser that hung as an odd angle on the wall dripping it’s fluids on a countertop with weird crustaceans clinging to the back edges, made me question my yearning for the two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, on a sesame seed bun.  After finding a dispenser of soap that operated and standing to the side of the impending torrent of the faucet I dried my hands with the antiquated hand dryers and exited the un-kept area, thankfully.  Choosing to trust the food quality standards of both this establishment (why?) and the chain it represents, I ordered my weight loss saboteur with my customary Dr. Pepper.

The mass of customers flowing into the restaurant at this point was, well…massive.  I chose a bar height table next to the window.  I settled in to enjoy my treat.  The cars streamed by taking turns in the drive thru.  I noticed the wall paper peeling off the wall, trash outside on the ground, dirty tables and the drink station littered with soda spills, straw wrappers, melting ice cubes again I questioned my sanity of wanting to eat at this restaurant.  The crowds of moms looking harried, children being children, elderly and the occasional business type person flowed with the precision of a well oiled machine.  The “crew” behind the counter moved in the same way as the patrons, food prep hands were a blur, little headset mikes tuned into the drive thru, communicating with customers they may never see.  As I sat eating the always consistent hamburger, I witnessed an employee hurriedly picking up trash outside while another bussed tables a quickly as a table was vacated.  I felt like the world was in fast forward around me as I enjoyed the last few bites of my Big Mac.  The bustling of the crew and patrons kept the room feeling lively around it’s thoroughly used structure.

There is something to be said about the comfort of sameness in our lives.  It feels good to know what is coming next.  The joy you can find in everyday consistency helps to balance the chaos that always seems to emerge in our daily comings and goings.  The people came and went from this consistent facet.  It isn’t perfect but the consistency of the food draws us back every time.

P.S. I wasn’t brave enough to venture back into the restroom but my hope is someone did some cleaning in there too.
